50 Years

Last weekend we went to Indianapolis for my parent’s 50th Anniversary. It is a pretty amazing accomplishment! The older I get the more I realize how much effort my parents put into staying to together and raising our family. Please enjoy this slideshow of photos we put together for the party.

Cancelled Series “Lone Star”

Part of the Austin Film Festival year round calender this year included a special showing of the cancelled Fox series Lone Star at the Alamo Ritz.  The story of a Texas con man with 2 wives was actually really interesting.  Although if I didn’t live in Texas and know the scenery of Midland so well I may not have been as interested.  We got to see 4 unaired episodes and chat with series creator Kyle Killen.  Kyle was a really likable guy who gave a lot of insight into the world of network television including the pressures put on a creator.  Did Fox make a mistake?  Who’s to say.  But the acting talent was terrific and I expect to see many of them in other roles soon.

A-Ha

I’m totally on an A-Ha kick tonight.  Can anyone tell me that the video for Take On Me is not the most awesome thing every for the 80s?

I would embed it here but they’ve disabled that feature on the youtube official vid.  That will be an entirely different blog post concerning why you would ever not want people to share your videos and reach a larger audience.  Anyway click the link and enjoy.

“There Is So Much Mad In Me” review

First let me start by saying I am officially renaming Austin to “Awesome”  This week is Fusebox Fest – a hipster art, music, film & dance festival featuring all the best quirky artists from around the country.  Featured in the festival was a free 3 night performance of NYC choreographer Faye Driscoll’s “There Is So Much Mad In Me.”

I begin my review by saying everyone involved in the production was extremely talented.  Particularly did this talent excel in the acting segments of the presentation.  I believe it was Faye Driscoll’s mission to make the audience feel uncomfortable, which was accomplished.  However I failed to carry any sort of message home.  There was no real theme just a blending of odd awkward dance moves with even more awkward audience interaction.  This included a scene in which one of the dances walks around the crowd yelling to “Get the F*** down!”  Surprisingly one audience member even complied, making us all the more uneasy.  But yet no message attached.  What were we supposed to fear?  Making us feel fear just for the sake of it seemed immature or even childish.

In the end the glimmers of amazingness failed to shine through.  Sadly if this show hadn’t been free I would have demanded my money back.

Off Centered Film Fest

Last night I got the chance to finally attend an event that groups two of my favorite things -beer made by an awesome entrepreneur and a film festival.  Each year Sam Caligione brings his Dogfish Head brew crew down to Austin, Texas, to the Alamo Drafthouse to party.  Last night the party involved a 7 course feast paired with rare beers and a screening of 3 classic films including Laurel & Hardy.  Here’s the skinny:

Out first was a seared scallop with mussuman curry, lotus root, chard and kale paired with the Belgian white Namaste.  The pairing was excellent and the scallop was the shining star.  Perfectly seared and so delicious you’d easily mistake it for butter.  This was by far the highlight of the evening.

Second was a smoked trout mousse with meyer lemon, cucumber, fennel, english thyme, spring garlic on a cumin cracker.  Expertly blended there was only the faintest taste of fish mellowed by a perfect spice balance. And it teamed up nicely with Aprihop which tasted pretty much just like the title suggests.

Up next was a bulgar wheat shell stuffed with roasted eggplant steamed in mushroom broth with spiced pepper and oregano yoghurt sauce.  On this course the difficulty in feeding 200+ people began to show as the plate was nearly cold though it was supposed to be served warm.  It was good but I couldn’t help but wonder how much better it could be served at the proper temperature.  Midas Touch the 2700 year old beer recipe shown brilliantly and is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites.

Our fourth course brought the protein.  An empanada stuffed with quail, ramps and wild mushroom served with avacado crema and carrot escabeche.  Pangea, the beer with ingredients from all over the world, was teamed awesomely.

The fifth course was my least favorite of the evening.  Seared bison with chimayo chile posale.  The bison was from a local Austin farm but my piece was completely all fat.  I tried cutting it but it wasn’t happening.  In the end I just gave up and left the glob of fat on my plate.  But I did greatly enjoy the Raison D’Etre beer made from green raisons.

Sixth was my second favorite.  A cherry duck confit with barley risotta and fried shallot.  I wish there had been more duck and less barley but it was delicious and hot!  This was served with Immort.  I think this was the first time I’d had Immort and it was delicious.  Made from Vermont maple syrup it tastes amazing and at 11% will get your engine running even in the 4 oz portion we obtained.

The night came to an amazing end with a bittersweet chocolate ganache in a ginger caramel crisp with candied grapefruit.  Rich chocolate paired perfectly with the light sourness of the grapefruit.  And finishing it off with a delicious vintage Fort was the perfect close to an amazing time.

Updated: After TSA Screening

As I mentioned in my other post last week I am a very frequent traveller taking more than 100 flights a year.  I frequently decline body scanners to avoid additional radiation and have never had a problem.  Sunday was different.  Leaving Indianapolis first of all the elite line was longer than the regular line (strike 1).  Then stepping up to have my id scanned this TSA agent kept glaring at me next to the girl marking my id.  It got to the point it was uncomfortable.  I’m not sure what I did wrong but he definitely thought it was something.  Stepping up to the xray machine I’m told to step through the scanner.  Not one other person before or after me was asked to go through them except me and my wife.  Weird.  So we decline.  I then got the pat down and wow is it revamped.  I’ve never had a dude grope me quite like that.  He was a nice guy and everything it was just really awkward.  It took about 10 minutes and we were through.  I wish I knew what I did that was so suspicious so I could avoid doing it next time!  I did have to feel for the TSA agents though who are receiving an unprecidented number of people avoiding the scanners.  And after yesterday’s report on NPR stating that the machines shoot up to 15 times more radiation than they were rated at I would hope even more people will avoid them.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Football

I’m in Lubbock for work this week and checked out the Texas Tech versus Oklahoma State Cowboys football game at Jones AT&T Stadium.  It was a PINK OUT game for breast cancer awareness and the tailgating was great.
